Taneytown Community Mediation Initiative

The overall goal for the Taneytown Community Mobilization Program is to reduce quality of life infractions and criminal violations, by increasing community attachment and reducing neighbor, at-risk youth, and family conflict of the citizens of Taneytown. Problems identified in the Community Needs Assessment include a fearful community, juvenile crime, perception of juvenile delinquency by community residents, and lack of strong neighborhood organizations. Activities adopted to achieve the stated objectives include the development and implementation of the Community Mobilization by Neighborhood Committees and the integration of the Family and Community Mediation into the overall Community Mobilization Plan. These activities contribute to a reduction in quality of life infractions and help to facilitate a decrease in neighbor, youth, and family conflict.

Specifically, there are many quality of life issues that differ in each community; therefore, a joint effort by an array of community members is required to develop relevant plans for each neighborhood. In addition, because the plan involves the division of Taneytown into quadrants, a Board of Representatives will be established for each quadrant. The integration of Family and Community Mediation into the overall strategy provides immediate and accessible mediation services to neighbors, at-risk youth, and families in conflict. This initiative will increase community attachment, decrease quality of life infractions, and decrease neighbor, at-risk youth and family conflict through achieving the goal of improving communication among citizens and between citizens and law enforcement.
