Parent Education

Parent Education Workshops are provided at our agency, in neighborhood schools, and at other locations in the community. Workshops are usually two hours in length, held in the evening, and are led by staff counselors and therapists. Fees are $12 per person or $18 for two people; scholarships are available. OCTOBER:

Parenting Teenagers
Monday, Oct. 13, 2008  (6:30-8:30pm)

Teens are a great joy and a great challenge! Join us for a lively discussion of provocative as well as "typical" teen behavior. Presenters use dramatic role plays to demonstrate strategies for dealing with parent-child conflict positively and productively. Presented by Gary Honeman, LCSW-C and Joyce Agatone, LCSW-C. 

Discipline with Love (Parenting the Elementary-Age Child)
Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 (6-8pm)

A foundation workshop for parents of children ages 5-11, with a focus on positive, effective discipline.  Topics include understanding and redirecting misbehavior and strategies for increasing cooperation and communication. Presented by Linda Define, LCSW-C. 


NOVEMBER:

1-2-3 Magic

Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 (6-8pm)

A presentation of a special program developed by Thomas W. Phelan PhD. for parents to use with children from kindergarten through the elementary years. Workshop will focus on how to handle difficult behavior, manage manipulative behavior, encourage positive behavior, and how to be fair with rules and consequences. Presented by Mindy Yard, LGPC.

 

Strengthening Stepfamilies

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 (6-8pm)

What can parents do to build healthy, positive stepfamily relationships? We'll discuss the myths and truths about successful stepfamilies and how parents can work together to strengthen relationships in their family. Presented by: Jan Kennedy, LCSW-C.

This workshop presents practical ideas, techniques, and strategies for parents of children with especially challenging behaviors. Are you unsure if behavior warrants professional help? Bring examples of problems you’d like help with. Presented by Joan Nelson, LCSW-C. 

Attention Difficulties in Children
Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 (6-8pm)

A workshop for parents whose child has been diagnosed with attention problems. We'll discuss strategies for homework, organization, self-control, and social skills at home and at school. Presented by: Nan Billingslea, LCSW-C.
